There is perhaps no passage of Scripture more etched into the human consciousness than Psalm 23. It has been whispered at bedsides, recited at gravesites, and clung to in the heat of battle. But for the believer, these aren’t just comforting poetic lines; they are a specific declaration of God’s protective sovereignty. “The Lord Is My Shepherd” takes this ancient Psalm and injects it with the raw, cinematic power of Christian metalcore, creating a track where the “quiet waters” meet the “darkest valley.”
This song is a cornerstone of my background mission to archive the Psalms into metalcore. As one of the most recognizable pieces of literature in history, the challenge was to “do it justice” and to match the epic scale of God’s promises with an equally massive sound.
This song will be in the unofficial “Psalmcore” collection on YouTube, but it sits in All Glory Worshipcore’s first full-length album, “All Glory to God: Doxology & Dominion” and serves as a bridge between my foundational era of music creation and the next era of my music.

📖 Scripture Inspiration
This track is a direct, verse-by-verse adaptation of the most beloved Psalm in the Bible, focusing heavily on the visual and spiritual weight of the valley and the table.
Primary Scripture: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul… Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:1-4
Secondary Imagery: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” — Psalm 23:5-6
🔥 Song Meaning
The Lord Is My Shepherd utilizes heavy metaphors and aggressive delivery to emphasize the “big points” of David’s confidence in God.
- The Sufficiency of Christ: By starting with “I will not be in need,” the song establishes that the Shepherd’s provision is total. We don’t lack because He is the source.
- The Valley of Death: The music video and the song’s climax focus heavily on Verse 4. In metalcore, we often talk about “the fire,” and there is no fire hotter than the shadow of death. The vocals in the chorus emphasize that our lack of fear isn’t based on our strength, but on His presence.
- The Table in the Trenches: I highlight the theological truth that God provides a “table” in the presence of enemies. He doesn’t always remove the enemy; He sustains us right in front of them.
- The Pursuit of Grace: The breakdown emphasizes that goodness and faithfulness “follow” us. In the original language, this suggests a relentless pursuit. God’s mercy is hunting us down every day of our lives.

🎶 Lyrics
“The Lord is my shepherd…”
SHEPHERD!
The Lord is my shepherd, I will not be in need.
He lets me lie in green pastures of peace,
He leads me beside the quiet waters,
He restores my soul and makes me whole.
He guides me in paths of righteousness,
for the sake of His holy name.
You restore my soul… You lead me home!
Even though I walk through death’s dark valley,
I will fear no evil—You are with me!
Your rod and Your staff — they comfort me!
You lead me on, You set me free!
YEAHHH!
You prepare a table before me, Lord,
in the presence of all my enemies.
You’ve anointed my head with oil of grace,
my cup overflows — unending peace!
Surely goodness and faithfulness will follow me!
All my days, Your love surrounds me!
Forever I will dwell in Your house, O Lord!
Forever I am Yours!
YEAHHH!
Even though I walk through death’s dark valley,
I will fear no evil—You are with me!
Your rod and Your staff — they comfort me!
Forever I’ll dwell in Your majesty!
“The Lord is my shepherd… I shall not want.”
FOREVER WITH MY SHEPHERD!
🙏 Behind the Creation
Writing for Psalm 23 was a weightier task than most. Because it is the “most popular” Psalm, it is easy for people to gloss over the words. I wanted to create an epic song that forced the listener to hear these promises as if for the first time. The visuals I chose for the video, specifically focusing on verses 4 through 6, showcase the contrast between the dark valley and the anointed table.
This is a “Psalmcore” track through and through. Minimal “twisting” of Scripture, no extra fluff, just the Word of God set to a sound that matches its eternal impact. Whether you are a long-time believer or someone just seeking comfort, I hope this song points you toward the only Shepherd who can lead you out of the valley and into His house forever.
