There is a massive difference between being cracked open and being completely finished. When life piles on, when your family is falling apart, your bills are stacking up, and the people you love are spiraling… it doesn’t just stress you out. It gets into your bones. It makes getting out of bed feel like a chore, and it makes walking through your own front door feel heavy. In those moments, generic church clichés don’t help. You don’t need someone telling you to just “smile and have faith.” You need a faith that actually works when you feel like you’re suffocating.
“Broken But Not Destroyed” wasn’t written from a quiet desk or a comfortable studio. It came straight out of a season where my life and my family’s life felt like an absolute war zone. It’s a heavy, aggressive track built on a simple, gut-level truth: God doesn’t run away when you’re broken. He actually draws closer.
We are fragile, flawed clay pots, but the God living inside us cannot be ruined. You might take a direct hit, you might hit the ground, but in Christ, you are not destroyed.

📖 Scripture Inspiration
The heartbeat of this song is anchored directly in Paul’s apostolic declaration of survival and divine power in the midst of suffering:
“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NASB)
Paul didn’t pretend ministry or life was painless. He acknowledged the pressure from every angle, yet pointed straight to the unstoppable presence of Christ within frail vessels.
The lyrics are further forged and held together by these essential biblical anchors:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (NASB)
“For thus says the high and exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.'”
— Isaiah 57:15 (NASB)
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
— Psalm 147:3 (NASB)
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”
— Psalm 51:17 (NASB)
The Lyrical Anatomy of Scripture
Every lyric in this track was pulled directly from the promises I had to cling to just to keep my head above water. Here is the biblical backbone behind the words:
| Lyrical Line | Bible Passage | What It Actually Means |
| “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted in the dead of the night” | Psalm 34:18 | When your heart is in pieces, God isn’t distant or disappointed in you. He is right beside you. |
| “He saves the crushed and brings the spirit back into the light” | Isaiah 57:15 | God dwells in high and holy places, but He also chooses to live with the person whose spirit is completely crushed. |
| “Gasping for air in this valley of unrest” | Psalm 23:4 / Ezekiel 37:1-3 | Real life brings dark valleys where you feel completely dry and exhausted, but the Shepherd is still walking with you. |
| “He binds the wounds that I don’t understand” | Psalm 147:3 | You don’t have to make sense of all the trauma or confusion before God starts wrapping up your injuries. |
| “The Truth is a lion that roars in my soul” | Proverbs 28:1 / Revelation 5:5 | When fear and lies tell you you’re done, the voice of Jesus cuts straight through the noise. |
| “He takes the fragments and He makes them whole” | Psalm 51:17 / Jeremiah 18:4 | God doesn’t throw away broken pieces. He puts the clay back on the wheel and reshapes it. |
| “The pressure of the world is a diamond in the making” | James 1:2-4 / 1 Peter 1:6-7 | The brutal weight of life doesn’t destroy genuine faith—it burns out the junk and makes it bulletproof. |
| “His love is the only thing that’s never, ever shaking” | Hebrews 12:28 / Psalm 62:2 | Everything on this earth can fall apart, but God’s covenant love doesn’t budge an inch. |
| “Broken… but not destroyed” | 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 | You can be overwhelmed, confused, and knocked down, but you are held by an eternal grip. |
Song Meaning: Clay Pots and Priceless Treasure
In 2 Corinthians 4:7, Paul writes something incredible: “We have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves.”
Back in biblical times, an “earthen vessel” wasn’t fancy decorative pottery. It was a cheap, fragile, everyday clay pot. People used them for dirty chores—holding waste water, gathering trash, or dumping ashes from the fire. They broke easily, had zero value, and nobody cried when one shattered. That’s what Paul compares us to. We aren’t invincible superheroes. We get tired, we get hurt, and our bodies and minds wear down under pressure.
God intentionally put the priceless treasure of the Gospel inside cheap clay jars. Why? So that when a clay pot survives a massive storm, everyone knows it wasn’t the jar that pulled it off—it was the power of God inside it.
Paul follows that up with four brutal contrasts in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9:
- Afflicted in every way, but not crushed: The Greek word here means being squeezed and pressed hard from every single direction. It feels like the walls are closing in, but you aren’t backed into a corner with no way out.
- Perplexed, but not despairing: This means being completely at a loss, having no idea how things are going to work out or why things are happening. But you don’t stay in utter despair because your trust isn’t in your own wisdom.
- Persecuted, but not forsaken: You might feel hunted down by circumstances, broken relationships, or the enemy, but God never abandons you on the battlefield.
- Struck down, but not destroyed: This is combat language. It’s like getting clocked right in the jaw and knocked flat on your back. You hit the mat hard, but the fight isn’t over. You aren’t eliminated.
When a clay pot takes a beating and cracks, it doesn’t show how tough the clay is. It lets the light inside shine out through the fractures. The fact that you are still standing through the trial is proof that God is holding you together.

Behind the Creation: Forged in the Furnace
I’ve shared before that making music for AGW hasn’t happened in some easy, quiet season of life. But what you need to understand is that none of this was a temporary rough patch. These trials aren’t a bad week or a rough couple of months that wrapped up neatly before I sat down to record. They are persistent, deep-seated battles that have been grinding on for years, some of them spanning more than five years… and every single one of them is active and ongoing to this very moment.
Trying to raise three young kids in Southern California while both my wife and I work around the clock just to get by is an ongoing grind. The sheer cost of living, constant fatigue, and financial stress don’t take days off, and they put real pressure on a marriage. We’ve had to fight through disagreements, tension, and moments where exhaustion turned into resentment or harsh words that had to be repented of and worked through.
At the same time, my extended family has been living inside a waking nightmare that refuses to stop. For years, my brother has been spiraling deeper into severe drug addiction coupled with serious mental illness and suspected schizophrenia. It hasn’t been quiet; it has meant violent altercations against my parents, repeated emergency hospitalizations, forced psychiatric holds, arrests, jail time, and endless court dates… and that cycle is still turning. My sister has been trapped in alcoholism for years, which eventually led to a fatal DUI accident where a human life was lost. Walking through the aftermath of that, jail visits, courtrooms, having to face the grieving family, and dealing with intense social backlash… has torn through our family like a wildfire.
Inside that trauma, relationships with my parents have suffered badly, especially with my mom, leaving unresolved anger and bitterness that we’re still navigating. On top of that, our family property (land that has been in our name for over 100 years) is actively tied up in a vicious legal dispute. A family member has spent years fighting to force a sale just to cash out, fully willing to put my parents and siblings on the street. Right in the middle of that war, my grandmother passed away directly on the property. Screaming, psychotic episodes, police units at the door, and ambulance sirens have been the constant background noise of my life for half a decade. None of that is in the rearview mirror. It is happening right now, today, while I build this music.
There are days when the silence in the room is suffocating, and just walking out the door feels like moving a mountain.
Writing this song didn’t make those problems disappear. But it forced me to realize that my own anger, pride, and attempts to fix everything by myself were completely useless. I couldn’t save my family, I couldn’t resolve the legal battles, and I couldn’t carry the stress alone. All I could do was fall flat before the Lord. He hasn’t removed the storm, but He has kept me breathing inside it. The jar is cracked wide open, but by His grace, I am not destroyed.
Radical Transparency: The Human Elements, The Vocals & The Guitar
From day one, I promised that everything done in this ministry would be completely honest and out in the open.
On “Broken But Not Destroyed,” you are hearing a lot more of my own physical voice. I stepped up to the mic to track the clean backup vocals, and almost all of the heavy roars, harsh screams, and gutturals you hear across the track are mine. Those screams didn’t come from a plugin; they came from living through the persistent, ongoing battles I just described above.
On the guitar side, I am still very much a learner putting in the time, but I’m working more and more to get my own hands onto the recordings. I tracked the raw guitar scratch right at the start of the song and played on some of the heavy rhythm sections that drive the groove. For the massive, complex parts and technical leads that are still beyond my current physical skill, I use digital tools to help build out the soundscape.
In todays world of technology, its wild to see how things like this can be done… But I’m not hiding behind a screen. I’m taking my lumps, building calluses on the fretboard, and putting the work in. Even if it is not the traditional way of doing things.
The voice is real, the sweat is real, the heart is real, and the struggle is real. More importantly, the Spirit is real.
All glory to God.
