Woe to You Hypocrites: Song Meaning, Lyrics & Biblical Breakdown

Most worship songs are designed to comfort, uplift, or celebrate. But there is another side to the voice of God found in Scripture: The Rebuke. So I put it into Christian metalcore.

“Woe to You Hypocrites” is not a comforting ballad. It is a heavy, epic, and condemning track that channels the righteous indignation of Christ against religious performativity. It serves as a stern warning to anyone, myself included, who focuses on the external appearance of religion while neglecting the heart.

God is not fooled by the mask.

📖 Scripture Inspiration

The entire lyrical foundation of this song comes from Matthew 23, where Jesus delivers the “Seven Woes” to the Scribes and Pharisees.

The Core Imagery (Matthew 23:27):

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.”

The Neglected Weightier Matters (Matthew 23:23):

“For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness…”

The Dirty Cup (Matthew 23:25):

“Woe to you… for you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.”

These verses are not metaphors; they are direct accusations against a faith that looks good on Instagram but is dead in the secret place.

🔥 Song Meaning

“Woe to You Hypocrites” explores the dangerous difference between True Religion and Legalism.

The tone is intentionally aggressive because the sin it addresses is deadly. Hypocrisy doesn’t just hurt the hypocrite; it “shuts off the kingdom of heaven from people” (Matt 23:13).

This song represents:

  • Divine Warning: A wake-up call to the church.
  • The Mask: The futility of “whitewashing” a tomb.
  • The Sorrow: The solo and chorus reflect the tragedy of building “religious graves” while missing the grace of Jesus.

⚔️ Worshipcore Sound & Production Notes

🎶 Lyrics

HYPOCRITES! Yeahhh!

Whitewashed tombs — polished and clean! But inside full of death, corruption unseen! The pride of men, the mask they wear… Blind guides leading to despair! Ohhh!

Self-righteous pride will blind your eyes! The higher you climb — the harder you fall!

Woe to you, hypocrites! Building graves, but missing grace. Blind to the truth, bound in lies… Your kingdom crumbles before His eyes!

They tithe the mint, they tithe the spice, but neglect the mercy, justice, life! A heavy burden on every soul… But their own hearts remain stone-cold! Yeahhh!

Self-righteous pride will blind your eyes! The higher you climb — the harder you fall!

Woe to you, hypocrites! Building graves, but missing grace. Blind to the truth, bound in lies… Your kingdom crumbles before His eyes!

You clean the cup — BUT THE HEART IS STAINED! A life of pride — NOTHING GAINED! The gate is narrow — BUT YOU WON’T BEND! Self-righteous ways — LEAD TO THE END! Ohhh!

TO THE END! TO THE END! YEAHHHHH!

Woe to you, hypocrites! Building graves, but missing grace. Blind to the truth, bound in lies… Your kingdom crumbles before His eyes! You hide behind religion’s wall… But without Christ — you’ll lose it all!

HYPOCRITES!!!

🙏 Behind the Creation

I wrote this song to warn believers that external appearance does not fool God.

I have seen many people close to me fall into this condition—looking perfect on the outside while their hearts grow cold and distant from Jesus. It is a heartbreaking thing to witness. I felt the weight of that sadness and the urgency to put this warning out there using the specific language of Jesus.

My prayer is that this track shakes the listener out of complacency.
