It came straight out of my own struggle with sin and my deep dependence on Jesus Christ. Romans 7 has always hit close to home for me, and this song became my way of confessing that tension, the battle between the flesh and the Spirit, while pointing to the victory that only Christ can give.

This track blends heaviness, emotion, introspection, and Scripture because that’s exactly what was happening inside me when I wrote it. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. I was crying out to God.

Scripture Inspiration

Romans 7:24–25 sits at the core of this song:

“Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.” (NASB)

That cry has been in my own heart many times, especially in the moment that led me to write this track.

Other Scriptures that shaped the lyrics:

  • Romans 6:1–2 — We cannot continue in sin just because grace abounds.
  • Galatians 5:16–17 — The flesh and the Spirit are constantly at war.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:27 — I must bring my body into subjection so I’m not disqualified.

These verses helped me articulate what I was wrestling through. The weakness of my flesh and the strength of God’s grace.

I also found myself reflecting on:

  • Psalm 51
  • Matthew 26:41
  • James 1:14–15

All of these Scriptures echoed the same truth I felt: without Christ, I am hopeless. But with Him, there is deliverance.

Song Meaning

This song came out of a very personal moment of failure. I had told a blatant lie to my wife, a small one, but it was instant and instinctive. I didn’t even mean to say it, and yet it slipped out before I could process it. That moment hit me harder than I expected. It made me confront the reality that even as a believer, I’m still living in fallen flesh.

It broke me.
It humbled me.
And it reminded me how desperately I need Christ.

Wretched Man is my confession:

  • I hate sin, yet I still stumble.
  • I want to do good, yet sometimes I fail.
  • My flesh is weak, but the Spirit is willing.
  • And through it all, Jesus is the One who rescues me.

This song is a cry, but it’s also a shout of gratitude:

“I thank God for the Lord Jesus Christ.”

That line is the turning point: the hope, the freedom, the victory.

When I created this song, I wanted the sound to feel like the inner conflict itself:

  • The intro carries tension and sorrow.
  • The verses reflect a confessional tone, almost like a journal entry turned into worship.
  • The prechorus hits with conviction straight from Romans 6.
  • The chorus rises with desperation, love, longing, and gratitude.
  • The instrumentation leans heavy to represent the spiritual war.
  • The mix of soaring cleans and supporting screams mirrors the spiritual tension and the hope found in Christ.

This was one of my earliest songs, and even though my sound has grown since then, the raw honesty of this track still means a lot to me. It’s one I may remaster someday.

Behind the Creation

I wrote Wretched Man after wrestling with my own sin. It was not a moral catastrophe, but a quiet moment that caught me off guard. It revealed how quickly the flesh reacts, even in a believer who genuinely wants to please Christ.

That moment forced me to face my weakness head-on.
It humbled me and pushed me back to the cross.

This song became part of my own repentance, my own reflection, and ultimately my own worship. I wanted others to hear it and know they aren’t alone in the fight. This is a battle we all face… and Christ is the One who delivers us.

Even as my sound was still developing, this track captured something essential to my heart and the identity of All Glory Worshipcore.
