When the noise of life drowns out the felt closeness of God, standing on the edge of burnout makes spiritual apathy feel almost inevitable. But apathy is an enemy we cannot afford to surrender to. Built on a foundation of driving punk drums, technical melodic hardcore riffs, and heavy, gut-wrenching breakdowns, this track takes King David’s cry in Psalm 51:12 and turns it into a battle cry. It’s an aggressive refusal to stay numb, asking God to break the chain of indifference and bring back the joy of His salvation. Not just so we can feel okay again, but so we can stand back up and help lead other broken souls out of the dark.

Scripture Inspiration

The backbone of this song is forged straight from King David’s broken heart following his repentance in Psalm 51.

“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit.”

— Psalm 51:12 (NASB)

When David prayed this, he wasn’t asking for the return of his kingdom, his reputation, or his comfort, he was begging for the restored presence and joy of his Redeemer.

Secondary anchors that breathe fire through the verses include:

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.”

— Matthew 5:13 (NASB)

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.”

— Psalm 51:10-11 (NASB)

“O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may declare Your praise.”

— Psalm 51:15 (NASB)

“Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will be converted to You.”

— Psalm 51:13 (NASB)

Song Meaning

“Restore the Joy” attacks the unspoken reality of spiritual dryness head-on:

• Breaking the Facade: It exposes the pain of “going through the motions” like singing worship songs while feeling completely detached and numb inside.
• Repentance Over Performance: It shifts the focus from trying harder in our own strength to throwing ourselves entirely on the mercy and sustaining grace of God.
• Warfare Against Apathy: Spiritual apathy is treated not as a minor slump, but as a dangerous enemy that requires violent prayer and fast-paced urgency to break.
• Purpose Beyond the Fire: The track highlights that restoration isn’t just for personal comfort; God restores our joy so that we can lead other broken sinners back to the Ancient of Days.

Lyrics

Bring it back!
Bring it back!

I’m going through the motions of a life I used to know
A fire turned to embers, buried in the snow
I sing the songs, but the melody is cold!
I’m grasping for a hand that I used to hold! (I used to hold!)

The salt has lost its flavor (Matthew 5:13)
The light has started to dim (Matthew 5:14-15)
I’m standing on the edge, looking in!

I don’t want to be a hollow shell
Dancing on the rim of a personal hell
(Wake me up!)
God, wake me up! (Ephesians 5:14)

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation! (Psalm 51:12)
Ignite the spark, revive the fascination!
I don’t want to walk alone
Sustain me with a spirit that is willing! (That is willing!) (Psalm 51:12)
The silence in my soul is chilling!
Restore the joy! (Psalm 51:12)

Do not cast me away! (Psalm 51:11)
Do not turn Your face! (Psalm 27:9)
I am desperate for the rhythms of Your grace!
Burn the apathy! Break the chain! (Isaiah 58:6)
I’m tired of living in this spiritual rain!
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways (Psalm 51:13)
And sinners will return to the Ancient of Days! (Psalm 51:13, Daniel 7:9)

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation! (Psalm 51:12)
Ignite the spark, revive the fascination!
I don’t want to walk alone
Sustain me with a spirit that is willing! (That is willing!)(Psalm 51:12)
The silence in my soul is chilling!
Restore the joy! (Psalm 51:12)

Open my lips! (And my mouth shall declare Your praise!) (Psalm 51:15)
Open my lips! (And my mouth shall declare Your praise!) (Psalm 51:15)
I want the fire back!
I want the life back!

SUSTAIN! ME! (Psalm 51:12)
WITH A WILLING SPIRIT! (Psalm 51:12)
BRING! IT! BACK! JOY!

Restore the joy. (Psalm 51:12)
Restore the life.
My salvation.
(I am willing…)

Behind the Creation

This song wasn’t written in a vacuum or pulled out of a peaceful season of life. It was forged in the middle of a warzone. Over the last few years to months, my family and I have been walking through some of the heaviest, most suffocating trials we’ve ever faced.

Between severe financial pressures, the everyday weight of fatherhood, intense strain on my marriage, and the gut-wrenching anxiety of watching people we love battle addiction and face death, there were days when just getting out of bed felt like a loss.

When you’re in the thick of that kind of pain, spiritual numbness sets in fast. You stop feeling. You start going through the motions. Writing music in that state felt almost impossible, and the enemy wanted nothing more than for me to fold, lay down my gifts, and let the embers burn out.

But “Restore the Joy” became my line in the sand. It wasn’t written as a slick artistic project; it was a violent, desperate prayer thrown at the feet of God when I had nothing left in my own tank. It was me demanding that the chaos of my circumstances would not steal the eternal joy that Christ already bought on the Cross.

I want to be completely open about how this track was made. Because this song was birthed during a season before I picked up the instrument myself, I used digital production tools, including Suno’s Voice feature trained on my own recorded vocal print, to create, mix, and master the initial composition.

But I refuse to leave it on a screen. Right now, in the late hours after long workdays and family commitments, I am putting in the grueling hours by hand, learning the fast-paced riffs, leads, and chord progressions on my guitar so I can physically execute this music myself. This project is a living, breathing extension of my actual life, my voice, and my ongoing fight for the faith.
